Writing in a journal is the one thing I do that requires no discipline at all. I can’t not do it. This story began as a journal entry the day after the round-up. It was a significant event for me; a kind of coming-back-to-life after laying low for a long time. It became the title story in a book of 12 stories taken out of my journals, about life in law school and as a public defender in Seattle.
